Beach Profile Creator and Calculator - Using Relative Height Change

Create a beach profile and calculate the cross sectional area using cumulative horizontal distance and positive or negative relative height change. Download an image of your profile and print the data calculations used to construct and analyse it.

This Beach Profile Creator and Calculator supports the Emery board method of measuring a beach profile, a simple method developed by coastal scientist K.O. Emery. The technique, shown below (from Komar, 1998), consists of two calibrated rods connected by a 5 or 10 metre rope. This length sets the measurement interval for individual data points along the profile.

Enter your transect cumulative horizontal distance and height change data in the calculator below. Select the type of profile required (drawn with rounded or straight lines) and click the 'Calculate' button to calculate your data. The 'Open Profile' button will then open your beach profile in a new window. A menu appears above the profile offering several options, including downloading an image. Hover over the image to display the data.

The 'More' button opens a beach volume calculation option. The 'Customise' button opens options to change the beach profile title and set the X-axis range.
