Barcelona Victim of Crime Surveys

The Victimization Survey of Barcelona has been conducted annually since 1985. The availability of such a long and solid series of indicators has allowed the city to rethink their survey model, an annual telephone survey to a sample of 4000 Barcelona residents. This allowed for statistical representation at the district level. The objective has been to find alternative models that allow the maintainance of the series of main indicators and at the same time release resources to address other areas of priority interest in the knowledge and management of security in the city.

Thus, apart from the change in the survey methodology, with the implementation of a digital survey combined with the telephone (effective from 2015), the sample has been modified to complete a biannual sequence of 4000 versus 1000 interviews. One year a sample of 4000 people will be interviewed to obtain representative district data, and another year there will be 1000 interviews that will allow the maintainance of the series of main indicators at the city level.

The reports include:

  • sociodemographic characteristics of the victims
  • experiences of the crime victims
  • location of the crimes
  • perception of security
  • perception of civility in the city as well as the immediate environment
