Barcelona Field Studies Centre

Student Fieldwork Induction Policy

On or shortly after arrival in Barcelona

  • Students should be briefed to cover the aims and objectives of the course, and  the main hazards as identified in the risk assessments should be communicated.
  • Students should be given an opportunity to discuss special needs, or concerns, if any.
  • Provision should be made for students with physical disabilities.
  • A hotel Emergency Evacuation plan should be communicated to the students and school staff.
  • If visiting school staff allow students free time under 'remote supervision' outside of the hotel, a meeting point should be identified that also acts as a collection point in the case of emergencies. This should be permanently staffed for the duration by a member of the visiting school staff. Students should be given a contact telephone number for a member of their school staff, a copy of their passport, and the address and telephone number of their hotel. Students should remain in a minimum group size of four. A signing in/out book should be made available at hotel reception.

Before the field study

  • Students should be briefed before their field study to cover the aims and objectives, an outline of the methodology to be used, and hazards as identified in the risk assessments.
  • A recommended dress code should be outlined. The expected weather conditions should be communicated. Visiting school staff are responsible for checking that their students are appropriately dressed before departure to the field study site.
  • Visiting school staff should ensure that appropriate medication, food and water for identified individual need are taken for the duration of the trip.
  • Where appropriate, all students and school staff should be issued with maps of the field study locations.

At the field study site

  • A short briefing should be given upon arrival at each new fieldwork location to identify the hazards outlined in the fieldwork risk assessment.
  • A check should be made that students are appropriately dressed.
  • The use and care of field study equipment and relevant health and safety procedures should be demonstrated.
  • Students should be given an opportunity to discuss special needs, or concerns, if any.
  • Provision should be made for students with physical disabilities.
  • Field Centre staff should carry a charged mobile telephone, first aid kit and emergency services information.
  • Where transport to the field study site is by coach, the coach should remain at the site until the departure of the group. If, for any reason, the coach has to temporarily move to another location, contact with the driver should be maintained by mobile telephone.
  • An Emergency Evacuation plan relevant to the fieldwork should be communicated to the students and school staff.
  • If visiting school staff allow students free time under 'remote supervision' at the field study site, a meeting point should be identified that also acts as a collection point in the case of emergencies. This should ideally be permanently staffed for the duration by a member of the visiting school staff. Students should be given a contact telephone number for a member of their school staff, a copy of their passport, and the address and telephone number of their hotel. Students should remain in a minimum group size of four.

After the field study

  • Near misses, illness and accidents should be logged in the accident book.
