In Catalonia, the virus reproduction rate has fallen for 24 consecutive days, and today stands at 0.80. The epidemic is in regression, with growth reducing by 20% and each infected person passing the virus to an average of 0.8 others.

The cumulative incidence rate of the coronavirus in 14 days has decreased from 1,054.53 to 1,010.70 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. There have been 5,375 new infections and 63 deaths registered in the last 24 hours. Today, there are 2,148 hospitalised patients, 53 less than yesterday. There are 560 patients in intensive care, a decrease of 12 in the last 24 hours.

A total of 5,070,375 (65.66% of the population of Catalonia) have now been vaccinated, 50,764 in the last 24 hours. This includes 4,024,228 (52.11% of the population) who have received their scheduled two doses.

The Ministry of Health for Spain has registered a further 24,753 new infections since yesterday, including 12,989 diagnosed in the last 24 hours. The total number of people infected since the start of the pandemic rises to 4,447,044.

After 35 days of increases, the cumulative incidence rate (the number of cases diagnosed per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days) has fallen for a third consecutive day, from 696.31 to 687.30.

There have been 44 new deaths registered in the last 24 hours, and 199 in the last seven days. The total deaths in the pandemic rises to 81,486. The data exclude deaths in residences and those who had symptoms compatible with Covid-19 but did not undergo a diagnostic test.

After rapidly falling since the start of the pandemic, the lethality of the virus saw a steady rise from 8 February 2021, followed by a gradual decline from 26 March. The case fatality rate on 26 March was 2.304 deaths per 100 patients and today stands at 1.832. These trends are shown in the graph below.

There have been increases in the last 24 hours in both the number of coronavirus patients admitted to hospital and in those in intensive care. There are currently 9,825 patients admitted throughout Spain, 100 more, with 1,698 in intensive care units, an increase of 44. The occupancy rate for beds taken by coronavirus patients in Spain has increased from 8.14% to 8.24%, and in intensive care units, from 17.71% to 18.31%.

A total of 29,252,754 people (61.67% of the Spanish population) have now been vaccinated, 234,499 in the last 24 hours. This includes 26,933,847 (56.79% of the population) who have received their scheduled two doses.

In Catalonia, the virus reproduction rate has fallen for 23 consecutive days, and today stands at 0.81. The epidemic is in regression, with growth reducing by 19% and each infected person passing the virus to an average of 0.81 others.

The cumulative incidence rate of the coronavirus in 14 days has decreased from 1,101.38 to 1,054.53 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. There have been 3,835 new infections and 66 deaths registered in the last 24 hours. Today, there are 2,201 hospitalised patients, 7 less than yesterday. The Ministry of Health for Spain has registered a further 26,689 new infections since yesterday, including 13,696 diagnosed in the last 24 hours. The total number of people infected since the start of the pandemic rises to 4,422,291.

After 35 days of increases, the cumulative incidence rate (the number of cases diagnosed per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days) has fallen for a second consecutive day, from 699.84 to 696.31.

There have been 46 new deaths registered in the last 24 hours, and 192 in the last seven days. The total deaths in the pandemic rises to 81,442. The data exclude deaths in residences and those who had symptoms compatible with Covid-19 but did not undergo a diagnostic test.

There have been increases in the last 24 hours in both the number of coronavirus patients admitted to hospital and in those in intensive care. There are currently 9,725 patients admitted throughout Spain, 53 more, with 1,644 in intensive care units, an increase of 51. The occupancy rate for beds taken by coronavirus patients in Spain has increased from 8.08% to 8.14%, and in intensive care units, from 17.21% to 17.71%.

In Spain, mortality remains amongst the lowest of the entire epidemic, despite the current strong regrowth phase of the virus, particularly among the younger population.

The Ministry of Health for Spain has registered a further 61,625 new infections since Friday, including 6,636 diagnosed in the last 24 hours. The total number of people infected since the start of the pandemic rises to 4,342,054.

The cumulative incidence rate (the number of cases diagnosed per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days) has risen, from 677.67 to 700.10.

There have been 47 new deaths registered since Friday, and 98 in the last seven days. The total deaths in the pandemic rises to 81,268. The data exclude deaths in residences and those who had symptoms compatible with Covid-19 but did not undergo a diagnostic test.

There have been increases in since Friday in both the number of coronavirus patients admitted to hospital and in those in intensive care. There are currently 9,384 patients admitted throughout Spain, 1,429 more, with 1,490 in intensive care units, an increase of 198. The Ministry of Health for Spain has registered a further 12,345 new infections since yesterday, including 6,378 diagnosed in the last 24 hours. The total number of people infected since the start of the pandemic rises to 3,821,305.

The cumulative incidence rate (the number of cases diagnosed per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days) has risen, from 117.17 to 134.31.

There have been 8 new deaths registered in the last 24 hours, and 53 in the last seven days. The total deaths in the pandemic rises to 80,883. The data exclude deaths in residences and those who had symptoms compatible with Covid-19 but did not undergo a diagnostic test.

There have been decreases in the last 24 hours in both the number of coronavirus patients admitted to hospital, and in those requiring intensive care. There are currently 2,357 patients admitted throughout Spain, 18 less, with 584 in intensive care units, a decrease of 17. There have been 282 admissions and 345 discharges in the last 24 hours. The occupancy rate for beds taken by coronavirus patients in Spain has fallen from 1.95% to 1.94%, and in intensive care units, from 6.52% to 6.38%.

A total of 24,037,058 people (50.68% of the Spanish population) have now been vaccinated, 276,650 in the last 24 hours. This includes 17,990,526 (37.93% of the population) who have received their scheduled two doses.

In Catalonia, despite the worsening of epidemic indicators, mortality remains the lowest of the entire epidemic. There have been 12 deaths in the last seven days, one of the lowest figures since the first official death from covid, on March 6, 2020. The average age of the newly infected continues to decline and falls to 28.7 years.

The coronavirus epidemic has been in a regrowth phase for 14 days. The reproduction rate (or R0) has risen from 1.42 to 1.54. Every 100 infected people pass the virus to 154 others, increasing the growth by 54% every day.

A total of 4,175,394 (54.07% of the population of Catalonia) have now been vaccinated, 57,270 in the last 24 hours. This includes 2,600,732 (33.68% of the population) who have received their scheduled two doses.

UK Government Foreign Office (Friday, April 19th, 2024) no longer advises against all but essential travel to Spain, based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks. Spain is on the amber list for entering England.

¹ Chinese and American researchers have used the infection data from the first few weeks to model the temporal and spatial evolution of the coronavirus first in Wuhan, the start of the pandemic, and later in 375 other Chinese cities. To see how the virus could progress, they overlapped this information with the movement patterns of hundreds of millions of Chinese recorded by the telecommunications company Tencent in Chunyun 2018. This period of the Chinese lunar calendar begins a few days before the Chinese New Year. and it lasts for several weeks afterwards. This year, the New Year fell precisely on January 23. Thus they were able to estimate how the coronavirus moved. The work, published in the Science journal, has found that until Wuhan's forced isolation, 86% of all infections were not being detected. That is, only 14% of the infected were under control. The rest, whether asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, continued to lead their normal lives. Thus, for many days there were two very different transmission rates. That January 23, there were only 801 documented cases throughout China, while the total number of new COVID-19 infections during 10â€“23 January in Wuhan city is estimated at 13,118 (documented and undocumented combined).
After Wuhan's closure measures, later extended to much of China, the dynamics of the epidemic changed in the city of origin. Between January 24 and February 8, the study authors estimate that the percentage of invisible infected people drops to 35%. They also come to light faster. For the first time, the basic reproduction number (R0) of the epidemic, understood as new infections for each infected person while sick, fell to 0.99. It was the first step in controlling the epidemic, although only in Wuhan.
