A third of the infections are concentrated in Madrid which has restricted the entry and exit of 37 areas for 14 days starting next Monday. The total number of people infected since the start of the pandemic rises to 640,040.

432 deaths from coronavirus have been registered in the last week. 90 new deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours. The total deaths in the pandemic rises to 30,495. The total number of people infected since the start of the pandemic rises to 614,360, 11,193 more than yesterday. The discrepancy is caused by including those tests that take more than a day to become known.

366 deaths from coronavirus have been registered in the last week. 239 more deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours. The total deaths in the pandemic rises to 30,243. The data exclude deaths in residences and those who had symptoms compatible with Covid-19 but did not undergo a diagnostic test. There has been excess mortality of almost 10% with more deaths than expected in the month of August and the second week of September. The Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) reports that between July 27 and August 29 there were 3,466 deaths in Spain more than expected and that last week (from September 8 to 13) another 533 were registered in excess.

The total number of people infected since the start of the pandemic rises to 603,167, 9,437 more than yesterday. The discrepancy is caused by including those tests that take more than a day to become known. Data for Catalonia are not included in this count due to technical difficulties.

The acceleration of infections does not correspond with an increase in mortality. The lethality of the virus continues to fall and is currently 4.97 deaths per 100 detected infections. 303 deaths from coronavirus have been registered in the last week. 156 more deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours. The Ministry has not provided coronavirus diagnostic data during the weekend since 4 July. The total number of people infected since the start of the pandemic rises to 593,730.

The lethality of the virus continues to fall and is currently 5.02 deaths per 100 patients. 207 deaths from coronavirus have been registered in the last week. 101 more deaths have been reported since Friday. The Ministry of Health for Spain has registered 4,708 new infections diagnosed by PCR tests in the last 24 hours. The total number of people infected since the start of the pandemic rises to 566,326, 12,183 more than yesterday. The discrepancy is caused by including those tests that take more than a day to become known.

This is the highest number of positive tests detected since the start of the pandemic, and is related to the significant increase in testing. Over 100,000 PCR tests are being conducted each day, five times more than at the start of the crisis.

Despite an acceleration in new coronavirus infections, Spain’s mortality rate has returned to normal compared with the same period over the previous five years, with no excess deaths since 18 May. On June 21 there were 9.07 deaths per 100 patients infected. The lethality has dropped to 5.9 deaths per 100 patients, a reduction that may be explained by:

• more testing leading to an increase in detected infections;
• the average age of those affected falling from 60 to 40 years of age, with younger people less vulnerable;
• better protection of the more vulnerable elderly;
• those infected receiving the best possible care now the saturation of the health system has passed;
• a better understanding of the virus and the range of therapeutics available to treat it;
• the virus becoming less virulent as it mutates;
• infected people passing on smaller doses of coronavirus due to social distancing.

The total number of people infected since the start of the pandemic rises to 470,973, 8,115 more than yesterday. The average person who tests positive in Spain is a female of 37 years and 55% of all cases do not suffer any symptoms. This supports the findings of Professor Carl Heneghan, director of the University of Oxford's Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine. He also sees a sharp rise in the UK in the number of healthy people who are carrying the virus, but exhibiting no symptoms. Almost all of them are young. This is not a 'second wave' leading to a surge in Covid-19 hospitalisations because they are being spotted through a comprehensive system of national test and trace now in place.
